Older brother thoughtfully sent me a computer to replace the dead one. This is how we figured out that it was the video card and not the motherboard after all, although we’ve all known here the motherboard was going bad. I’ve lost two ports on it, as well as one of the CPU threads.
I am grateful for the expensive gift, but my gratefulness does not negate the fact that the new computer is a *lot* weaker than the old one. The power supply can only hold about half of what I need and do. I had tried to explain to him on the phone what my requirements are (just conversationally; the computer was already ordered) but he’s not the listener he used to be. What I have garnered from our conversation is that AI work takes a lot less power than 3D comic book making.
Also, my older brother doesn’t understand the 3D needs. I was telling him of my dream computer – one so strong that instead of having to do preview tiny thumbnail renders to see how things work the sucker would simply render as I worked in real time – and he said, “So, modern computers.”
No, my dear brother. Not even today, although the tech is getting more affordable. Not unless you’re talking one of those modern computers that cost as much as a new car to build. LOL!
Older brother also thoughtfully sent me a video card which should arrive later today. He did this with statements like “yes yes I know you’re a proud native, take the damn computer”. So um… thankful. LOL
Here’s hoping The Other Half will have the skills to take all of the parts in the house and create a Frankenstein monster Mary Shelley would be proud of.
Without spending money – because otherwise I shall be content to do things 1995 for a while. We have cars to repair and licenses to switch. Without going into too much detail, we were sold a car with problems a few months ago to add to all of the financial drama that has come with handling the parents’ house and my little brother. So priorities. (But man, I wish I could go to my house for a while. Sigh.)
I’m thinking, though, that maybe I can do something on the side to tide things over if things aren’t up and running today. Some sort of something, even if I have to post photos from my phone.
Now, the Other Half is stubborn and he probably won’t give up until things are a go. I just like to come up with Plan B, C, D, to Z.
It wouldn’t be me without the biggest computer problems ever.
